Lounging by a pool of translucent ultramarine, I sipped a well-mixed mojito and gazed at a shower of bougainvillea blooms that matched the peach-hued campanile of Cartagena’s cathedral in the street opposite. A skyline of towers and latticed balconies overlooked the azure Caribbean Sea beyond.

On the 21st November the British embassador Haydon Warren-Gash opened the new British Consulate in Cartagena. The opening of the Consulate reflects the increasing number of British visitors to the Caribbean coast of Colombia, and the trade and tourism links generated by activities such as the Hay festival.

This major festival is now in its third successful year, firmly establishing Cartagena as a centre of literary culture for Latin America.

An alliance was recently announced between the world-famous real estate baron Donald Trump and a Colombian architectural firm to build the Trump Ocean Club skyscraper towards the end of 2006, with pre-construction prices starting from 290,000 dollars.
